NU Notes: Nebraska Defeats Utah State to Sweep the Weekend
The Nebraska women's tennis team (2-0, 0-0 Big Ten) finished its opening weekend with its second win of the spring season against Utah State (1-1, 0-0 Mountain West) 4-0 at the Dillon Tennis Center on Sunday morning.

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska women's tennis team (2-0, 0-0 Big Ten) finished its opening weekend with its second win of the spring season against Utah State (1-1, 0-0 Mountain West) 4-0 at the Dillon Tennis Center on Sunday morning.
To kick off the doubles action, the duo of Anfisa Danilchenko and Samantha Alicea faced Monique Burton and Magdalena Nunez Pureco on Court 2 and won, 6-1. On Court 1, Raphaëlle Lacasse and Ana Carmen Zamburek matched up against Zeynep Naz Ozturk and Sidnee Lavatai to clinch the overall doubles point, 6-3. To wrap up doubles play, Vivien Sandberg and Isabel Adrover Gallego played Annaliese County and Lisa Küng on Court 3 and were tied 5-5 before the match was called.
With the Huskers leading 1-0, singles play started with a win on Court 5, as Lucy Loy defeated Magdalena Nunez Pureco 6-4, 6-2. In the No. 2 spot, Carmen Zamburek bested Lisa Küng, 6-4, 6-1, giving NU its third overall point. On Court 6, Jillian Roa clinched the win for the Huskers in her season debut against Sidnee Lavatai, 6-1, 6-3.
The teams decided to conclude the match with Danilchenko on Court 1, Adrover Gallego on Court 3 and Alicea on Court 4.
Up next, Nebraska will host Gonzaga on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. CT. at the Dillon Tennis Center.

Trio of Huskers Set All-Time Marks at Texas Tech Open
The Nebraska track and field team wrapped up action at the Texas Tech Open this weekend with three Huskers setting all-time marks on Saturday.
Jonah Wilson led four Huskers in the top-eight of the men's shot put with a personal-best toss of 67-0 (20.42m). He finished second behind the NCAA leader in the event. Wilson's mark is currently first in the Big Ten, second in the nation and third in school history.
Maxwell Otterdahl joined Wilson with a personal-best distance to place third. His 65-10 1/4 (20.07m) is currently tied for second in the Big Ten, tied for fifth nationally and tied for fourth in school history.
Kevin Shubert had a mark of 60-4 (18.39m) to finish fourth and Nick Ronnfeldt had a distance of 55-0 (16.76m) to round out the Big Red throwers in the top-eight.
Garrett Kaalund clocked a 20.96 in the 200m to claim fourth in a field of over 100 runners, which moves him up one spot to fourth all-time in program history.
Micaylon Moore had a personal-best mark of 51-1 3/4 (15.59m) to place third in the men's triple jump, while Terrol Wilson leaped 48-0 (14.63m) to finish 10th.
Axelina Johansson pitched in a runner-up finish in the shot put with a toss of 58-0 1/2 (17.69m), and Taylor Latimer placed eighth with a distance of 50-3 1/2 (15.33m).
In the men's high jump, Mayson Conner tied his personal-best jump of 7-3 3/4 (2.23m) to grab the runner-up placement. On the women's side, Jenna Rogers cleared 5-7 3/4 (1.72m) to tie for seventh.
In the men's pole vault, Till Steinforth cleared 16-2 1/2 (4.94m) to finish 10th.
Niko Schultz and Nick Bryant pitched in 10th and 12th-place finishes in the men's 800m with times of 1:53.27 and 1:54.22.
Ashley McElmurry was crowned triple jump champion of the "B" section with a personal-best mark of 42-5 1/2 (12.94m).
In the "B" section of the women's shot put, Kalynn Meyer finished fifth with a mark of 50-4 1/2 (15.35m).
Brooklyn Miller was the top finisher for the Big Red in the "B" section of the women's high jump, placing third with a clearance of 5-7 (1.70m). Tyus Wilson cleared a personal-best 7-0 1/4 (2.14m) in the "B" section of the men's jump to finish as runner-up, while Ashriel Dixon took fourth with a 6-8 3/4 (2.05m).
The Husker men (Julian Watson, Kaalund, Schultz, Bryant) finished sixth in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:13.49.
Nebraska is set to host the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 3-4 at the Devaney Center Indoor Track. Events begin at 12 p.m. on Friday and at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Huskers Avenge Loss Against No. 11 Ohio State
The No. 6 Nebraska Rifle team took down No. 11 Ohio State by a score of 4,715-4,651 on Saturday at the Nebraska Rifle Range. The Huskers moved to 7-5 on the season.
Four Huskers placed in the top-five overall. Freshman Emma Rhode placed first with a score of 1,181. She was followed by junior All-American Cecelia Ossi (second, 1,179), sophomore Mackenzie Strauch (third, 1,179) and freshman Vittoria Watts (fifth, 1,177).
"Today was below our average," said Head Coach Mindy Miles. "On a good note, Kenzie posted a personal best in smallbore and tied her aggregate. Overall, we are looking at picking a few points per position to reach the scores the team knows they can reach. We're looking forward to competing at conference championships in Alaska next weekend."
In the air rifle, Nebraska took four of the top five spots. Rhode led them with a first-place finish and a score of 595. Ossi was second with a score of 595, Watts was fourth with a score of 593 and Strauch was fifth with a 592. Strauch's score ties her personal best that she has shot four times this season.
NU also claimed four of the top five spots in the smallbore. Strauch took first with a 587, Rhode placed second with a 586, Ossi placed third with a 584, and Watts rounded them out in fifth with a 584. Strauch's score of 587 is her career best score.
Up next, the Huskers will travel to Fairbanks, Alaska, for the Patriot Rifle Conference (PRC) Championships on Feb. 4-5. They are set to start at 10 a.m. (central) on Saturday, Feb. 4.
Huskers Fall to No. 19 Illinois
Urbana-Champaign, Ill. - The Nebraska women's gymnastics team fell to No. 19 Illinois on the road, 196.700-195.800.
Despite falling to the Fighting Illini, NU saw seven Huskers notch new season-high scores.
Rotation One
The Huskers started on uneven bars, earning a team score of 48.525. Kinsey Davis led the Big Red with a 9.875, a season best, while Emma Spence followed with a 9.775. Genesis Gibson added a season-best score of 9.750, and Emma Simpton tallied a 9.700. Clara Colombo finished with a 9.425, and Sophia McClelland rounded out the rotation with a 9.100.
The Fighting Illini led off the meet on vault, finishing with a team score of 49.125. Mia Townes led Illinois with a 9.900, claiming the vault event title.
Rotation Two
Nebraska moved to vault for rotation two, tallying a team score of 48.975. Spence led NU with a 9.875 while Davis followed closely with a 9.850. Ayzhia Hall notched a 9.800, a season-best for the sophomore, and Katie Kuenemann added a 9.750. Katelyn Barth tallied a 9.700 while Sophia McClelland rounded out the rotation with a 9.675.
Illinois competed on uneven bars for rotation two, earning a team score of 49.175. Mia Takekawa led the Fighting Illini with a score of 9.950, claiming the event title.
Rotation Three
Sophia McClelland and Halle Rourke led the third rotation on floor, each scoring a 9.850 as the Huskers tallied a 49.075. Rourke's 9.850 marked a season-best for the sophomore. Emma Simpton made her floor debut with a 9.825 while Kylie Piringer earned a 9.800. Spene finished with a 9.750 while Kuenemann tallied a 9.700.
Takekawa led the Fighting Illini with a 9.925 on beam, claiming the event title, during rotation three while Illinois finished with a team score of 49.125 on the event.
Rotation Four
NU finished the afternoon on beam, notching a team score of 49.225, a season best for the Huskers. McClelland led the Big Red with a 9.875. Hall and Simpton both notched a 9.850 while Colombo and Spence both tallied a 9.825. Allie Gard finished the meet for Nebraska with a 9.800, a season best.
Abby Mueller led the Fighting Illini on floor, finishing with a 9.900 to take the event title. Illinois finished with a 49.275.
The Fighting Illini claimed the meet victory with a 196.700 while the Huskers tallied a 195.800.
All-Around
Mia Takekawa earned the all-around title with a score of 39.525. Spence finished with a 39.225 to finish in third while McClelland finished in fourth with a 38.500.
Up Next
The Huskers return to action next Monday, Feb. 6 against the Iowa Hawkeyes. The meet will take place at the Bob Devaney Sports Center and is set to begin at 8 p.m. (CT).
Huskers Nail Four Titles in Win over Penn State
College Park, Pa.- The No. 3 Nebraska men's gymnastics team collected the 399.550-398.000 win over No. 4 Penn State Saturday afternoon. The Huskers took four of the six titles as a unit on pommel horse, vault, and high bar to highlight their first dual match of the season.
Luke James record the first individual career-best of the meet with a 12.60 on floor. Nathan York scored a career high on rings (13.50), while Chris Hiser (14.05), Donte McKinney (14.80) and Luke James (14.35) all collected career-highs on vault, tallying a total of five career-bests for the Big Red.
Floor
The Huskers jumpstarted the meet on floor led by Captain Taylor Christopulos with an impressive 14.30, claiming his second floor title of the season and just one-tenth shy of his career-high. Chris Hiser totaled a 13.30 and Moritz Mueller showed a 12.95. Luke James posted a career high (12.60) and Toby Liang wrapped up the Huskers' floor scores with an 11.60.
Pommel Horse
NU totaled 66.900, just 0.05 off the Nebraska pommel horse record to beat (69.950). Cooper Giles' score of 14.00 won the event title with Taylor Christopulos establishing a season's-best score of 13.60 for second place. In third, Nathan York showed a career-best score of 13.50. James Friedman's score was also a season best at 13.45 landing him in fourth, and Travis Wong rounded out the Huskers showing a 12.35.
Rings
Nebraska rallied on still rings, with Chris Hiser and Asher Cohen tying for sixth, finishing with a score of 13.35 each. Teammates James Friedman (13.10), Moritz Mueller (13.05), and Travis Wong (12.85) followed for the Cornhuskers.
Vault
Nebraska scored an electric season-high of 71.800 on vault with all five gymnasts scoring at least a 14.00. Donte McKinney led Nebraska with a 14.80, clinching the event title and topping his career-best. Luke James and Chris Hiser's career-highs of 14.35 and 14.05 highlighted the event along with Zac Tiderman's 14.30, a season-best. Taylor Christopulos anchored the event in fourth place for NU (14.30).
Parallel Bars
The Big Red was led by one of their captains, Taylor Christopulos, landing in third (13.20) on the event. James Friedman (13.05) and Asher Cohen (12.70) were fourth and sixth, respectively, and were followed by teammates Joey Pepe (12.55) and Travis Wong (12.30) on parallel bars.
High Bar
On their final event of the dual match, Zac Tiderman soared to 13.95 to snag the high bar title for Nebraska with Donte McKinney capitalizing in second (13.65) and Taylor Christopulos in fourth (13.55). In sixth, Toby Liang (12.90) and Joey Pepe (12.25) also in the rotation.
Huskers Open Two-Match Road Trip with Victory
Clemson, S.C. – The Nebraska men's tennis team picked up its second win of the season with a 4-2 victory over South Alabama on Saturday afternoon in Clemson.
Saturday's action started with doubles play, as the Husker duo of Roni Hietaranta and Lars Johann dropped the first doubles match to Sébastien Collard in the number two spot 4-6. The Huskers bounced back, though, winning the other two doubles matches.
In the number one spot, Nic Wiedenhorn and Shunya Maruyama picked up a big doubles win for the Big Red, defeating Maxime St-Hilaire and Jack Clements of South Alabama 6-4. NU clinched the doubles point with strong play from the number three duo of William Gleason and Leo Linquet 6-3.
No. 75 Hietaranta picked up the second Huskers' point of the afternoon with a straight-set victory over No. 123 Collard 6-0, 6-3 in the first singles spot. Following his win, Johann grabbed the third point for Nebraska with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Juan Accossatta. On Court 2, Calvin Mueller battled, but came up just against St-Hilaire 4-6, 4-6.
The Huskers clinched their second victory of the season with a three-set win by Maruyama over Jack Clements 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Linquet retired from his match after winning his first set 6-2 and trailing in the second set 5-6. On Court 6, Gleason was tied at one set apiece when the two teams agreed to call the match unfinished.

Huskers Fall to Rutgers in Final Dual
Berkeley Livingston led a top-three sweep for the Huskers in the 400 IM on Saturday morning, but it wasn't enough as Nebraska swimming and diving fell to Rutgers, 141-211.
Livingston, a senior from Lincoln, clocked a 4:21.45 to claim the 400 IM title after winning the 200 IM (2:03.05) in last night's session. Gena Jorgenson finished as runner-up in 4:22.86 and Sarah Barton rounded out the top-three in 4:24.43.
In the 1650 freestyle, Jorgenson raced to a victory with a career-best 16:33.70. Molly Rosenthal took third in a time of 17:01.74.
Shannon Stott and Lexi Kucera pitched in top-three finishes in the 200 freestyle with times of 1:48.50 and 1:49.90. Stott, a senior from St. Albans, Great Britain, cruised to her 10th individual title of the season last night with a 500 freestyle win in 4:45.26.
JoJo Randby finished as runner-up in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:01.66, while Caitlin Cairns placed third in the 100 butterfly with a 54.75.
Madesyn Ronquillio and Emily Haimes added a pair of third-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (56.12) and the 50 freestyle (23.69).
Kelsey Clairmont led NU on the boards, placing third on the three-meter with a 264.30.
Nebraska finished second in both of Saturday's relays with a team of Ronquillio, Randby, Cairns and Giulia Marchi in the 400 medley relay (3:42.81). In the final race of the day, Haimes, Stott, Kucera and Marchi swam a 3:25.25 in the 400 freestyle relay.
The Huskers will return to the pool Feb. 15-18 for the 2023 Big Ten Championships, hosted in Ann Arbor, Mich.
