Red Raiders Split Weekend Contests

SIDNEY – After winning their sixth game in a row handily on Friday, the Red Raiders saw that streak end on Saturday for their fifth loss of the season. Sidney, who is in the middle of a seven-game home stand to finish the regular season, turned a five-point halftime lead against Gering on Friday into a 20-point advantage in the third quarter to defeat the Bulldogs 68-48. But Sidney couldn’t duplicate that scenario on Saturday as their seven-point halftime lead vanished in a 54-50 loss to Scottsbluff.
Gering came into the Cabela’s athletic Facility on Friday on a six game win streak of their own, including a 10-point win over cross-town rival Scottsbluff on January 21st. But in the third meeting between the Western Conference foes, Sidney used nine first quarter points from senior Jaeden Dillehay to bolt to a 17-11 lead at the first break. Gering senior Max Greeley, who posted a 50-point performance against Torrington his last time out, knocked down 12 second quarter points to keep the Bulldogs close as Sidney led at half 34-29.
Sidney started the second half even stronger as Isak Doty made a pair of three-pointers and tallied eight points to propel the Red Raiders to a 23-8 advantage in the period and a 20-point 57-37 lead after three. Sidney, who shot just under 62% from the floor in the game and outrebounded the Bulldogs 36-18 maintained in the final stanza for the win. Sidney was led by Jaeden Dillehay’s 24 points while Isak Doty chipped in 17 points.

Rebounds and second chance points were the difference in Saturday’s game with Scottsbluff. Sidney started the second and final matchup of the season with the Bearcats strong once again. Sidney shot out to a 14-4 lead only to see the Scottsbluff trim the advantage to 18-11 by the end of the period. The Red Raiders stretched their lead in the second period to 28-13 with three minutes remaining in the half, but the Bearcats finished the half on a 9-1 run to cut Sidney’s lead to 29-22 heading to the locker rooms.
Scottsbluff kept their offense rolling after intermission as the Bearcats opened the second half with a 14-2 run to take a 36-31 lead. Sidney rallied to end the quarter on a 8-4 run to trail 40-39 after three quarters. The Red Raiders never led again as Scottsbluff owned the boards and made seven of nine free throws in the final period to secure the win. For one of the few times this season Sidney was outrebounded 32-21 leading to 16 second chance points for the Bearcats. Sophomore Landon Riddle was the only Red Raider in double figures with 16 points. Micah Schneider finished with nine points.
