SIDNEY – Not All the fireworks were in the skies over Sidney on Monday evening. The Sidney American Legion Seniors and the Chadron Post 12 FNBO Nationals created a few of their own at Legion Field before the night skies lit up with the real thing. Sidney rallied from a six-run deficit to force an extra frame before falling to the Nationals 10-9 in eight innings.
Chadron scored a pair of runs on three hits to open the game, then added three more on a three-run homerun by Set Gaswick in the third to take a 5-0 lead early in the game.
Sidney finally got on the board when Patrick McCartney led off the home half of the fourth inning with a double to left field, but was thrown out attempting to steal third. Chadron pitcher Trey Hendrickson then surrendered back-to-back walks to Zech Roggasch and Connor Hurt before getting Blaine Russell to pop up to first baseman Jordan Bissonette. Anderson Smelley smashed a ground ball to third baseman Caden Buskirk, who overthrew first allowing Roggasch to score Sidney’s first run. Hurt advanced to third and Smelley to second on the error. John Meza smashed a double to center to score Hurt and Smelley, cutting Chadron’s lead to 5-3 through four innings of play.
The Nationals responded with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take their biggest lead of the night at 9-3. However, the Nationals’ advantage would be short-lived as Sidney opened the bottom of the inning with a pair of singles from Connor Hurt and Sam Hulbert and an RBI double from Anderson Smelley to make the score 9-4. Following a ground-out and strikeout, Landon Riddle worked a two-out walk to load the bases. Reid Fiscus continued the Sidney onslaught by beating out a ground ball to deep short scoring Hulbert to cut the lead to 9-5. Patrick McCartney cleared the bases with his second double of the night, this time to right field, to get Sidney within one run at 9-8. Connor Hurt hit his second single of the inning scoring McCartney from second to tie the game at 9-9.
After a scoreless seventh inning, Sidney surrendered a run in the top of the eighth when Anderson Smelley, who came in to pitch in relief of Kyle Jaggers in the top of seventh inning, gave walks to Jordan Bissonette and Broc Berry to open the frame. Patrick McCartney came on to pitch for Sidney and got Caden Buskirk to pop up to second for the first out of the inning. Seth Gaswick, who finished the night a double away from hitting for the cycle, singled to center scoring Bissonette for what would be the winning run of the game.
Chadron scored 10 runs on 12 hits and committed 2 errors. Sidney finished with nine runs on 11 hits and had three errors. Jordan Bissonette got the win on the mound for the Nationals while Patrick McCartney takes the loss for Sidney.
