Laramie County, WY Sheriff Brian Kozak joined the Pine Bluffs City Council at their Tuesday night meeting to recognize Pine Bluffs Police Chief Austin Smith.
Sheriff Kozak awarded a commendation to Chief Smith for "exemplary dedication and exceptional actions" according to a letter Kozak read to the city council.
On August 23rd, law enforcement responded to the scene of a homicide outside Burns, WY and learned the suspect had escaped. It was Smith who spotted the suspect vehicle and pursued him down both sides of I-80 as far east as exit 1 in Nebraska and west almost back to Burns.
Smith was also recognized for the apprehension of the suspect in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies who had arrived at the scene and the coordination of his own team on the afternoon of the arrest.
Sheriff Kozak also recognized the first year chief for his "relentless efforts" to find a gun linked to the crime. A two day search of the area was conducted, and was eventually successful with the gun being found near I-80.
The sheriff ended his letter telling Chief Smith that his actions exemplified "the very essence of what it means to serve and protect."
