Eagles notes: Chadron State falls to #9 ranked Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- The Chadron State College volleyball team fell in three sets to the nations #9 ranked team, Colorado Mesa, Tuesday night in Grand Junction, Colorado.
The Mavericks won 25-16, 25-12, and 25-15, dropping CSC's record to 11-8 overall and 5-4 in conference play.
The Eagles hit a season low .041 in the match, while the Mavericks hit .363.
CSC was leading 15-13 in set one before the hosts manufactured a 10-0 scoring run. A service error ended the run but the Mavericks scored the final two points of the set.
Like set one, Chadron State led early but another Colorado Mesa scoring run ended set 2. The Eagles led 10-9 this time, but the Mavericks scored 12 of the next 13 points to gain a 22-10 lead before the set victory.
In set three, the score was tied at four before the Mavericks scored the next five points and never lost the lead on way to the match victory.
Mayson Fago, a senior from Evans, Colorado, and Kally Kirkwood, a freshman from Fleming, Colorado, had a team high five kills for CSC.
The Mavericks Sydney Leffler and Savannah Spitzer had a match high 16 and 14 kills, respectively. Leffler hit .448 while Spitzer hit .435.
Kendyl Kirkwood, a junior from Fleming, Colorado led the Eagles with 15 assists. Rylee Ward, a sophomore from La Grange, Wyoming added five.
Alondra Hernandez, a junior from Provo, Utah had a team high eight digs. A total of 10 different Eagles recorded a dig in the match.
Aiyana Fujiyama, a junior from Wahiawa, Hawaii, had a team high four blocks for CSC.
The Eagles return to action at home on Saturday at 4 p.m., against Westminster.
Eagle golf finishes in second
BILLINGS, Mont. -- The Chadron State College golf team finished in second place overall and two Eagles finished in the top five at the Yellowjacket Fall Invitational in Billings, Montana on Tuesday.
After firing a 304 (+16) and holding a share of the lead after round one yesterday, CSC shot a 319 (+31) Tuesday to finish second in the field of nine teams at +47 (623). Rocky Mountain College won the title after finishing +29 (605) for the tournament and shooting a 297 (+9) today.
As a team, Chadron State set a new record for Low 36 Hole Total to conclude their fall season. The previous record was set earlier this fall at the SMSU Spring Invitational, where CSC shot a 624 (+48)
After setting the school record for low individual round yesterday, Jordan Grasis, a senior from Yuma, Arizona, finished +4 (76) today and +1 (145) for the tournament, placing her second. She now holds the school record for Low 36 Hole Total for an individual.
Kinsey Smith, a senior from Windsor, Colorado, finished at +9 (153) for the tourney, placing her tied for fourth.
Grasis recorded a birdie, two bogeys and a double-bogey on the front nine today. The back nine had one double-bogey, a birdie and seven pars. She finished the weekend with the new school record for low 36-hole total and low round by an individual.
Smith shot a 76 (+4) during round two with three bogeys and two birdies on Tuesday's front nine and just three bogeys on the back nine.
Brooke Kramer, a senior from Aurora, Colorado shot a +8 (80) during round two, placing her tied 14th at (+16) overall. Kramer had nine bogeys and a birdie during the round.
A sophomore from Kimball, Nebraska, Payton Wise, was next in the overall standings for CSC, finishing tied for 22nd. Wise had three bogeys and two double-bogeys on the front nine before six bogeys and one double-bogey on the back nine to shoot +15 (87) today. She finished at +21 for the tournament.
Allison Acosta finished in 35th place overall after shooting a 174 (+30). Acosta finished round two at +16 (88) after having 12 bogeys on two double-bogeys.
Aubree Heinsma and Kenzey Kanno both competed as individuals for the Eagles. The duo finished tied for 27th place after carding a 168 (+24).
Chadron State concluded their fall golf schedule today. They will resume action in the spring, when the Eagles travel to Litchfield Park, Arizona on March 4, 2024.
