No. 10 Sidney hands No. 2 Ogallala first regular season loss in nearly two years
Sidney trailed 34-27 at the half but burst out of the locker room to outscore the Indians 21-8 in the third period to lead 48-42 heading into the final period of regulation. Ogallala made four 3’s in the fourth to tie the game at 54-54 and send the game to overtime. Both teams scored six points in the first overtime to force a second. The n Sidney held the Indians scoreless in the second extra period and made six of ten free throws at the end for the win.
Senior Reid Fiscus added 15 points and sophomore Keian Kaiser kicked in 12 to help the Red Raiders improve to 13-0. Sidney was scheduled to host North Platte on Saturday, but the Bulldogs cancelled all weekend activities due to hazardous winter weather in the forecast.
The Indians dropped a regular season game for the first time since they lost to McCook on February 4, 2022. It was their first defeat since a loss to Ashland-Greenwood in the Class C1 state tournament semifinals on March 10, 2023. They finished third last season.
Since 2018, Ogallala has qualified for the Nebraska School Activities Association State Basketball Championships five times. They finished runner-up in 2020 and third in 2019 and 2023.
The Indians were scheduled to play at Valentine on Saturday, but that game was postponed.
Defense once again set the tone for the No. 1 Sidney Lady Raider basketball team. Sidney forced 19 turnovers and held Ogallala to just 7 of 42 shooting (16.7%) on the way to a 53-32 win over the Indians Friday night in Ogallala.
Senior Karsyn Leeling paced Sidney with 12 points while Jordan DeNovellis and Kayla Westby each chipped in 10 points as the Lady Raiders improved to 13-0 on the season. The Indians, who fall to 7-5, were scheduled to play at Valentine on Saturday, but the game was postponed due to weather.
The Lady Raiders and Red Raiders are back in action next Friday when they host Gothenburg for their annual "Throwback Game" at Sidney High School. It will be another huge matchup for the Lady Raiders, as the No. 10 Lady Swedes are 11-1 on the year. Both Sidney teams travel to Yuma, Colorado next Saturday.
