Large grass fire burning northeast of North Platte, evacuations ordered

A large grass fire is burning north of North Platte a few miles east of Highway 83 and north of Hall School Road.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - A large grass fire is burning north of North Platte a few miles east of Highway 83 and north of Hall School Road. Specifically, the fire was near Betty’s Way off Twin Lakes Road. Numerous fire departments are on the scene battling the fire.

Lincoln County Emergency Management has asked people who live between Rolling Hills Road and Maxwell Road to evacuate. The Salvation Army is open for evacuees.

N Maxwell Rd, N Brady Rd, and Hwy 47 are closed from Hwy 30 North.

North Platte Fire Chief Dennis Thompson has requested that landowners 8-9 miles north of Brady area turn on their pivots immediately to assist in the eventual stop of the blaze. Chief Thompson stated that the fire had jumped numerous roads and flames were intensified by westerly winds.

Chief Thompson said Lincoln County Commissioners were working on a disaster declaration to aid in the process and aerial support along with it. The fire started Monday around 10:30 a.m. and is in the same vicinity as another large grass fire on Feb. 14. A red flag warning remains in effect until 9 p.m.
