Eagles fall in two games against #8 CCU

CHADRON, Neb. -- The #8 ranked Colorado Christian softball team defeated the Chadron State College softball team in two games Thursday afternoon, winning 11-2 and 6-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader.
 
The Eagles drop to 5-27 overall and 5-17 in RMAC action. Colorado Christian is now 31-4 overall and 23-3 in conference play.
 
Colorado Christian broke open a 2-0 lead with seven runs in the fourth inning of game one.
 
In the top of the first inning, Chadron State had four defensive errors, helping the Cougars gain a 2-0 lead. Neither team scored until the top of the fourth inning when CCU extended its lead to 9-0. The guests seven runs were scored on an RBI single and two three-run homers.
 
Chadron State added one run in the bottom of the inning when Ashland Baca, a senior from Pueblo West, Colorado, homered to left center to make the score 9-1.
 
The Cougars used a leadoff double and a triple to begin the fifth inning and extended their lead to 11-1.
 
Trailing by more than eight in the bottom of the fifth inning, CSC needed to score three runs to keep the game alive. Kenzi Garner, a junior from Broomfield, Colorado, began the inning with a solo home run to left center.
 
Chadron State's next two betters were recorded out before Brady Laucomer singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch but she was unable to be brought home, ending the game 11-2 in the guests favor.
 
Tori Haug, a senior from Commerce City, Colorado, pitched the complete game for CSC. Hanna Espinoza improved to 9-0 on the season for CCU.
 
The Eagles led 2-0 before the Cougars exploded for six runs in the fifth inning in game two's 6-2 defeat.
 
With runners on the corners in the bottom of the first inning, Chadron State scored the first run of the game when a Baca single brought home Laucomer, a sophomore from Scottsbluff, Nebraska.
 
Chadron State extended its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning. After a leadoff single by Laucomer and a sacrifice bunt to advance her to second, Lauren Zimmerman singled to center field, scoring Laucomer.
 
The Cougars six run rally started with a leadoff homer in the top of the fifth inning. After a batter was hit by a pitch and a double, a three-run homer gave the guests a 4-2 lead. The final two runs were scored on a two-rbi double.
 
Brooklyn Levin, a freshman from Littleton, Colorado received the loss in four innings of work. Garner pitched three innings of relief.
 
The Eagles will look to end an 11-game losing streak when they host the Cougars in another double-header tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
