NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - One person was killed and another was injured after a train and semi collided near Highway 34 in Dundy County on Tuesday.

Dundy County Communications received a report of a train and semi crash near Highway 34 and mile marker 2 at 2:45 p.m. The Dundy County Sheriff’s Office said the two occupants of the semi were ejected and transported to Wray Colorado Hospital for treatment.

The male semi driver from Wyoming was then flown out to another hospital for further care. The male passenger from Wyoming was pronounced dead at the hospital, the sheriff’s office said.

A preliminary investigation shows that the semi was attempting to cross the tracks ahead of the BNSF trains arrival to that crossing, the sheriff’s office said.

The Dundy County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Haigler Fire Department, Benkelman Fire Department, Red Willow Western Fire Department, Benkelman EMS, Wray EMS, the Dundy County Roads Superintendent and the Dundy County Clerk. This is an ongoing investigation.
