Gorden “Gordy” G. Sweetser, age 71, of Sidney, NE passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2024. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at the Evangelical Free Church in Sidney, NE with Pastor Kyle Larson officiating.  Burial with full Military Graveside Honors will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney, NE.  Services will be livestreamed on the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel Facebook page and recorded for later viewing on our website. 

Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Wednesday from 1-6:00 P.M. to leave condolences for the family.  Memorials may be made in care of the family. Gordy was born on February 1, 1953, to Lester and Irene (Schwisow) Sweetser. In 1971, he graduated from Fairbury High School and then joined the United States Navy in August of 1971. He attended Boot Camp at Naval Training Center, San Diego, CA, then remained in San Diego for his advanced training as a Culinary Specialist.  Upon graduation, he was transferred to Charlston SC and served aboard the USS Exploit, MSO -440 where he served until his discharge.

Gordy married Debbie Harms, on May 3, 1974, and this year, they celebrated 50 years together. They moved to Sidney, NE, where Gordy studied welding at Western Nebraska Community College. After receiving his degree, he worked as a welder at Egging Company, and then Convert-A-Ball until his retirement. Gordy enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, which included working in his yard, planting trees, playing horseshoes, camping, fishing, and sitting by the fire pit with his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Irene; his brother, Calvin; sisters, Barbara Alm and Nancy Barley; daughter, Candy Flood; son, Brady Sweetser; granddaughter, Caitlyn Armstrong; grandson, Brandon Barker; and nephew, Brady Barley.

Gordy is survived by his wife, Debbie Sweetser; his sisters, Peggy Sweetser and Lori Schaefer and significant other Paul Barnhill; his brother, Jeffrey and wife Lori Sweetser; and his children, Brandon and wife Lisa Sweetser, Santana and husband Phil Moreno, Angel Sweetser, Miranda Beyer, Caleb Sweetser, Jeffree Sweetser, Michael Sweetser, Jasmine and husband John Dunn, Travis and wife Cindy Sweetser, and Mikala Sweetser. Gordy was also a proud grandfather to 25 grandchildren and 5 great-grandsons.
