SIDNEY -- Joydene McCarville was announced as a finalist for National Assistant Coach of the Year.
The announcement was made by Sidney High School Activities Director Austin Lewis at the beginning of the awards ceremony during Thursday's Sidney High School Cross Country Invitational at Hillside Golf Course.
Lewis noted her extensive education career as well as her coaching of various sports. He said she has been in public education for 47 years.
"Twenty-five of those years she has been coaching either basketball, volleyball, track or cross country in the Grand Island and Sidney school systems. She has enjoyed being part of the Sidney Middle School and High School Cross Country programs as a highlight of her career," Lewis said.
Beyond the field, McCarville finds satisfaction in student athletes reaching new levels.
"She feels her greatest accomplishment is the opportunity to form relationships with athletes, and to get to be a small part of their story," Lewis said.
In 2023, McCarville received the Career Achievement Award from the Nebraska Coaches Association.
"She has now been nominated as a National Assistant Coach of the Year finalist for the National High School Coaches Association," he said.
McCarville said the recognition she enjoys is seeing athletes out-perform their expectations.
"It's an honor to receive that award, but its the day to day work with the kids that really always matters to me," McCarville said after her recognition.
