POTTER - A haystack fire erupted southeast of Potter Friday morning, drawing a swift response from firefighters.

The Potter Volunteer Fire Department received the emergency call at 7:50 a.m. and dispatched two pumper trucks, two water trucks and a team of 12 firefighters to the blaze, which ignited roughly 1.5 miles south of the County Road 18 and County Road 93 intersection.

Bob Hilpert, of the Potter Volunteer Fire Department, reported, despite initial progress in battling the flames, shifting wind conditions complicated efforts.

“Unfortunately, the wind picked up," Hilpert said. "The farmer who owned the stacks had to use two payloaders to tear apart and spread the haystack out to help us extinguish the fire better."

The fire was limited to the haystacks and no other damage was reported.
