Winter weather advisory, high wind warning issued as strong storm system approaches Nebraska
SIDNEY, Neb. (NCN) - A strong storm system is expected to bring high winds, snow and rapidly dropping temperatures to the region Tuesday evening into Wednesday, creating hazardous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service.
Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for Banner, Kimball, Cheyenne, Dawes, Sioux and Niobrara counties in Nebraska, as well as parts of southeast Wyoming, including Laramie and Goshen counties. Snowfall totals of 1 to 5 inches are expected, with gusty winds up to 55 mph creating blowing snow and reduced visibility. A flash freeze is also possible Tuesday evening as temperatures drop rapidly, potentially leading to slick road conditions.
A High Wind Warning has been issued for portions of north central, panhandle, southwest, and west central Nebraska, including Cherry, Keya Paha, Garden, Grant, Hooker, Arthur, McPherson, Deuel, Keith, Perkins and Chase counties. Winds between 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, are expected from Tuesday evening through Wednesday evening.
The storm is expected to linger into Wednesday with continued gusty winds and scattered snow showers.
A Blizzard Warning has been issued for central Nebraska and parts of north-central Kansas from 1 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, with 2 to 6 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 60 mph expected. The combination of heavy snow and strong winds could create whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous.
