SPNRD emphasizes burn ban ahead of holiday weekend

The South Platte Natural Resources District is reminding visitors to the tri-county district that a burn ban is in effect. In a statement, SPNRD specifically mentioned the popular and free campsite at Oliver Reservoir.
Earlier today, the SPNRD extended its own burn ban through Monday as the one set by Governor Jim Pillen was set to expire Saturday at midnight. Late Friday afternoon, Pillen extended the burn ban for the area that includes the SPNRD until at least May 20th.
An unusually dry winter and early spring has led to a number of serious fires in the northern panhandle. In the southern panhandle, grass fires have been extinguished quickly, but dry conditions and gusting winds mean the entire panhandle remains at significant risk.
There are to be no fires at Oliver Reservoir over the Mother's Day weekend, or until at least May 20th. Only permitted burns will be allowed in the rest of the district.
