Sidney Police remind drivers to use caution as school year begins

SIDNEY, Neb. – As students return to the classroom this week, the Sidney Police Department is reminding drivers to slow down, stay alert and use extra caution in school zones.
In a message to the community, the department wished students, teachers and staff a safe and successful school year, encouraging patience and attentiveness during drop-off and pick-up times. Officers said they will be increasing patrols in school zones to help ensure student safety.
Police also emphasized the importance of obeying traffic laws around school buses. Passing a bus with its stop sign extended is illegal and dangerous, carrying a fine of $500.
The department urged all drivers to help keep students safe by reducing speed, avoiding distractions and following posted signs in and around school areas.
