DALTON - A day after the two teams squared off on the gridiron, both Leyton and Garden County were announced by the Nebraska School Activities Association as playoff teams on Saturday morning.
The Warriors are in the postseason for the first time since 2015, when they lost to Garden County in the first round, 74-32. Leyton (5-3) is the #12 seed and will travel to Loomis to play the #5 Wolves (7-1) at 3 p.m. MST on Thursday.
It'll be the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Both teams have never won a state title.
Loomis, who makes the postseason for the first time since 2016, was the Class D2 runner-up in 1998.
News Channel Nebraska is planning on having live coverage of the game on 98.7 FM (KSID-FM, Sidney), newschannelnebraska.com and the NCN app.
Meanwhile, the Eagles (6-2) qualify for the playoffs for the 19th consecutive season. They earned the #8 seed and host #9 Medicine Valley (7-1) at 6 p.m. MST on Thursday.
Neither team has ever won a state football tournament. The two teams have met twice in the postseason. The last time was in the first round in 2018 when the Eagles defeated the Raiders, 50-8. Medicine Valley won the match-up in the second round in 2012, 64-42.
D2-10 district foe Mullen (6-2) - who lost to Garden County, but beat Leyton - is the #11 seed in the west and will travel to Pleasanton (7-1) on Thursday.
