Eight Chadron State College wrestlers entered the Rocky Mountain Open, hosted by Colorado School of Mines, in Golden, on Sunday.

Pacing the group was sophomore Colter Julian, whose 2-2 record in the 133-pound bracket led the CSC contingent. Julian pinned an opponent from CSU-Pueblo, and he majored an Adams State opponent whom he’d beaten previously in the varsity dual lineup. He was on the receiving end of two pins – one against an NCAA Division I opponent and the other from Air Force Preparatory Academy.

Four others went 1-2, with Hunter Gilmore and Javen Palmer each claiming a win over a Division I foe.

Rangers Beat Eagles In Five

Northwestern Oklahoma State piled on six runs in the top of the third inning, and held its 10-2 lead through two more frames, in order to win a softball game over Chadron State College in five innings on Sunday at Lubbock Cooper High School in Texas.

The Eagles tied the game at 1-1 in the first with a home run by J’lyssa Martinez. They held it to within 4-2 in the second when Aliyah Rothstein scored an unearned run, pinch-running for Lauren Zimmerman who opened with a single.

However the Rangers exploded for seven hits in the top of the third, aided by a CSC throwing error, to account for six additional runs.

CSC pitchers held their opponents hitless through the remaining two innings, but the damage was done. The Eagles left five stranded on base the rest of the way.

NWOSU pitcher Hannah Howell improved to 3-0 on the season, while CSC’s Tia Kohl fell to 0-4.

The Rangers are now 3-2, while the Eagles are 0-5.

Chadron State will attend another non-conference tournament next weekend in the Oklahoma City area.

Mountain Lions Sprint Ahead In Second Half On Saturday

The Chadron State College men’s basketball team held a slim lead at halftime, but the homestanding University of Colorado Colorado Springs Mountain Lions took charge in the second, shooting over 60 percent from the field and making 8-of-15 three-pointers in an 87-68 final in Colorado Springs Saturday evening.

Chadron State led for more than half of the first period, when there were 10 lead changes and eight ties. The Eagles went into halftime on top 37-35 after both teams scored on exactly 13 field goal tries and four three-pointers. The difference was two extra foul line shots and two extra baskets made for CSC.

Neither team led by more than two possessions in the first half.

In the second, UCCS went on a 30-7 run that consumed nine minutes and was punctuated by a dunk by the Mountain Lions’ Alijah Comithier at 8:09. That put UCCS up 71-49 and the home team’s lead remained between 19 and 24 for the remainder of the game.

Despite a large advantage in free throw shooting in the second half, the Eagles gave up 13 more buckets than they made, and more than half of those were from long range.

According to statistics provided by UCCS, the Mountain Lions made transitions their main advantage in the game, scoring 24 more points than CSC on fast breaks.

Comithier, a guard for UCCS, finished with a game-high 24 points, on 9-of-12 shooting, and tied for his team’s lead with six rebounds. Australian freshman Jezza McKenzie scored 17 to follow, while Jo’Nil Fugett was good for 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting including a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown. Fugett added eight assists and six boards.

For the Eagles, CJ Jennings was 3-of-6 from three and finished with 14 points and a team-high six rebounds. Mason Hiemstra added 11 points.

Next week is rivalry week for CSC as the Eagles host Black Hills State University on Tuesday, and travel to Rapid City on Thursday for a midweek game at South Dakota Mines. Look for information on Monday about a ticket discount at Mines for Thursday.

Eagles Fall In Colorado Springs, Two Weekday Games Up Next

The UCCS Mountain Lions (10-14, 8-10 RMAC) defeated the Chadron State College women’s basketball team (7-15, 6-11) 78-61 during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference battle Saturday night in Colorado Springs.

The Mountain Lions got revenge for their double-overtime loss to Chadron State in December as they took the lead to start the game and never gave it up against an Eagles squad who shot cold on field goals (17-61) and three-pointers (3-17).

The first quarter of the game was the lowest-scoring quarter for both teams. UCCS jumped to a 5-0 lead to start the game. Ashayla Powers and Olivia Waufle each answered back with field goals inside the paint to make it a 5-4 game.

The Mountain Lions began to pull away but not before CSC’s Micheala Dammann netted a jump shot in the paint in the final four seconds of the quarter to make the score 15-10 Mountain Lions.

The Eagles’ best offensive performance came in the second quarter when they shot 41.2% on field goals (7-17), 33.3% on three-pointers (1-3) and 83.33% on free throws (5-6).

Making the only Eagles’ three-pointer of the second quarter was Jori Peters, whose bucket at 3:18 made it 23-21 Mountain Lions. UCCS’ Shelby Megyeri and Emily Doolittle each scored a three-pointer to keep the Eagles at bay. The score was 35-30 at halftime.

The Mountain Lions outpaced the Eagles 43-31 in the second half, shooting eight field goals in the third quarter and 10 field goals in the fourth.

Chadron State added 15 free throws as well as two three-pointers from Samiyah Worrell and Olivia Waufle but simply could not keep up against the Mountain Lions’ balanced attack. The final score was 78-61.

CSC will host Black Hills State (15-8, 13-4 RMAC) on Tuesday and will travel to Rapid City to play South Dakota Mines (4-20, 4-14 RMAC) on Thursday. Both games start at 5:30 p.m.

Eagles Have Bright Spots At SDSU Meet

There was an array of bright spots again for the Chadron State College track and field team at the South Dakota State University Indoor Classic in Brookings on Saturday.

With teams from five midwestern states entered, there was plenty of competition, but the Eagles fared well. Eleven Chadron State entries placed among the top eight their events, and, maybe more importantly, 21 CSC athletes had season-best marks, showing that they are making progress.

Two of the times are the second fastest ever posted by Chadron State athletes in that event. Callie Collier of Dunning ran the 200 meters in 25.21 seconds and Logan Moravec of Gering completed the 800 in 1:54.91. Collier placed third in her race, which drew 88 entries, and Moravec was seventh among 51 contestants in his event.

Collier also ran the 400 in 58.71, her career-best and good for seventh on the Chadron State all-time chart. CSC Coach Riley Northrup said seeing Collier, who missed all of the 2021 season because of a sinus problem that required surgery, bounce back so strong this winter has been special.

As usual, the Eagles did well in the jumps. Derrick Nwagwu of Aurora, Colo., won the triple jump for the fourth straight meet with a mark of 49 feet, one inch, and Jourdaine Cerenil of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., and Miranda Gilkey of Lusk, Wyo., placed one-two in the high jump by clearing 5-7 and 5-5, respectively.

It was the third meet in a row that both Cerenil and Gilkey have jumped at least 5-5.

Veteran triple jumpers Brock Voth of Berthoud, Colo., and Joss Linse of Plattsmouth, Neb., also continued to be consistent while placing were fourth and fifth. In addition, freshman Hector Ortega of Northglenn, Colo., tied for third in the high jump while clearing a career-best 6-6 ¾.

Also placing high were redshirt freshman Dan Reynolds of Granby, Colo., who was fourth in the 35-pound weight throw that had 41 contestants and Creighton Trembly of Longmont, Colo., who was sixth in the high hurdles.

The Eagles put their depth on display in the last event at the SDSU Classic.

Since two members of the CSC men’s 4×400-meter relay team that has the fastest time in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference so far this season were not quite up to par because of tight muscles this past week, alternates Harley Rhoades of Douglas, Wyo., and Logan Peila of Miles City, Mont., got the call to join Greg Logsdon of Yoder, Wyo., and Osvaldo Cano of Oshkosh, Neb., for the race Saturday.

Northrup said he was pleased when the Eagles still finished fifth among the 20 teams in the event and their time was a stellar 3:22.67.

“It shows that we’ve got a lot of good 400 runners on the team,” Northrup said. “Their performance helped us have a really good day at the biggest meet we’ll attend this season.”
