Chadron State College track and field athletes dominated a number of events Saturday during the Bauer Open Meet at South Dakota Mines in Rapid City on Friday and Saturday.

RAPID CITY, S.D. -- Chadron State College track and field athletes dominated a number of events Saturday during the Bauer Open Meet at South Dakota Mines in Rapid City on Friday and Saturday. Besides the Eagles, Montana State-Billings, Rocky Mountain and Black Hills State joined the host Hardrockers in the competition.
The Eagles won 13 events, beginning on Friday, when Shane Collins and Dan Reynolds finished one-two, respectively, in the hammer throw with marks of 195-2 ¼ and 191-1 ¾. None of the other 20 entries reached 172 feet.
Chadron State men also were first and second in the shot put, where Reynolds was the winner with a throw of 48-5 ¼ and Parker Gonser was the runner-up at 47-6 ½. Quest Savery won the javelin at 191-3 and Collins was second in the discus at 149-9 ¾ and Gonser placed third at 147-8 ½.
Eagles swept the top three places in both the triple and high jumps. Derrick Nwagwu led the triple jumpers by going 49-2 ½, Brock Voth was second at 47-8 and Joss Linse was third at 44-8 ½. In the high jump, Joe Dumsa, Hector Otega and Alec Penfield, placed in that order after each of cleared 6-4 ¾ despite the strong winds that prevailed throughout of the meet.
Ishmael DePaullite was second for CSC in the long jump with a mark of 21-6.
On the track, Eagles swept the first six places in the 100 meters, although as of late Saturday night the results had not been posted. Coach Riley Northrup put all of his top sprinters in the race to help him decide who will make up the 4x100 relay team the remainder of the season.
A photo of the race showed that Morgan Fawver was first, followed apparently by Brodie Roden and Estabon Bozeman. Since the race was run with the west wind at their backs, the times are expected to have been extra fast if and when they are made available.
Otherwise on the track, CSC's Osiel Cano won the 400 hurdles in 56.75 seconds and Greg Logsdon was second in the 400 dash in 50.39, just one-hundreths of a second behind the winner, Ethan Pitlink of South Dakota Mines.
CSC women won five events, three of them by true freshmen. Caydince Groth won the 400 in 1:01.74, Alissa Wiemer captured the 400 in 5:03.81 and Danae Rader won the 100 hurdles in 15:61.
In a situation similar to the men's high jump, CSC's Jourdaine Cerenil and Hunter Wiebelhaus were the only women to clear 5-3 and placed first and second, respectively.
A foursome made up of Carlie Collier, Michaela Hill, Groth and Shantae Morgan won the 4x100 relay in 48.95 seconds. It was the only relay the Eagles entered Saturday.
Collier had a career-best time of 12.13 seconds in the 100 dash, but Breanna Fuller of Black Hills State timed in 12.12 seconds to claim first place.

Grizzlies seize control of series on Saturday
CHADRON, Neb. – April 9, 2022 – The Chadron State College softball team lost a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference softball games on Saturday, against Adams State University at home on CSC Softball Field in Chadron. The Grizzlies forced 10 innings in a 13-11 win in a three-hour game one showdown, and they prevailed 8-3 in game two.
The Eagles (6-32, 5-21 RMAC) fell into a tie with New Mexico Highlands for 11th place in the league standings. ASU improved to 11-26 (6-20 RMAC) and took sole ownership of 10th.
Chadron State held serve against the Grizzlies through nine innings, but ASU tipped the scale in the 10th. The score was 5-4 after three innings, 7-6 after four, and 9-9 through five.
The game remained tied after Paige Propp and Lauren Zimmerman laced together a single and an RBI double, respectively, in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game to extra innings at 10-10.
In the eighth and ninth innings, things quieted down, with only one base hit between the two teams after 31 combined among the teams in regulation.
Four hits in five at-bats, with only one out in the 10th, produced three runs for the Grizzlies in the final inning, and CSC managed only a solo homer, by Propp, giving ASU the 13-10 win.
Jasmine Garbiso improved to 4-4 on the season with the pitching win. CSC's Gabby Russell fell to 1-6.
The pace of the afternoon game was quicker. Through two innings, neither team scored and both were held to just a single hit.
In the third, ASU's Kylea Wall led off the top of the inning with a solo home run, giving the Grizzlies a lead they never relinquished.
With one out in the fourth, Adams State strung together five straight hits including Wall's third homer of the day, a towering two-run shot to left center. They also got an RBI double from Ruby Cota, who was ASu's second out, trying to take third on the throw to home plate.
CSC answered with back-to-back homers by pinch-hitter Mackenzi Kroll and Chloe Brown, in the bottom of the inning, netting three runs to close it to 4-3.
That was the last of the scoring for the Eagles, but ASU put three more across in the fifth inning, putting four hits on the board including a two-run dinger. The Grizzlies also received a pair of free bases from getting hit by pitches, and they left the bases loaded on the third out.
ASU's Mariah Madrid tacked on a solo home run in the seventh to put her team on top 8-3.
The elder Garbiso sister, Jade, received her second win of the season, improving to 2-8, while CSC's Kenzi Garner received the loss to go to 3-8 on the season.
Typically a first baseman, CSC senior Allie Mason stepped in as a relief pitcher in the fourth, facing 17 batters in three and one-third innings of work.
Despite a less than favorable weather forecast, the Eagles and Grizzlies will make an attempt to play another doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m.
