The Elston House: from pottery to PlayStation ... and more
SIDNEY -- A few feet south of Jackson Street and 10th Avenue, the history of entertainment and adult libations is being updated to the artistic minded.
Matt and Sarah Elston moved to Cheyenne County from Colorado. They have a farm/ranch near Gurley and have worked on some home projects in the area prior to purchasing the former Stewie's Bar. The new venture, Elston House, is a "makerspace." It is a place that encourages creativity.
"When we first moved here -- we always wanted to do things in the community, so, we kind of started out by Gurley with working on an old farm. Then we worked on a house here in town, and then we thought I guess one day that we might try a building. It's been a good experience," said Matt Elston.
Sarah Elston said they saw the building on the market, and had a vision for it.
"We saw this one come up. We had toured it and we were like 'it's got some good bones.' So, one of the things, we have three kids and we work in a full-time job each, and we were like 'well, maybe if we like get something else going that's more community and kid-centric and maybe one of us can get out of the 40 hours a week type of job and switch onto something that we can spend more time with our kids.' And that's also, too, one of the reasons why we bought the farm, so our kids would get that experience as well. We're very family driven," she said.
Sarah Elston said the vision is a place that has multiple art and elements, and retail. They will offer pottery and accessories, a seating area, retail displays for local home businesses, and are looking at possible food service in the future.
They moved to Cheyenne County about six years ago from Denver with the encouragement of friends.
"Sidney was very appealing. We have some friends that we knew from Lake McConaughy that had kept mentioning that Sidney was a great town. So we decided to take a look, and pretty much decided to move here," she said.
The Elston's are planning to open Elston House in early May.
