STERLING, Colo. — High winds are making travel dangerous and even impossible in parts of northeast Colorado.

Early Friday (December 2) afternoon, U.S. Highway 34 between Otis and Yuma was closed due to low visibility. Colorado State Patrol troopers also reported truck-trailers blown over in the wind gusts.

Businesses in the Sterling area encouraged customers to use alternate entrances to avoid wind damage. Wind damage cancelled the light display at Riverview Golf Course Friday. High winds and limited visibility due to blowing dust were reported in Goodland, Kan., as well.

A high-wind warning is in effect for the Sidney area until 5 p.m. Friday, December 2. The predicted high winds resulted in the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce moving the Parade of Lights scheduled for this evening to Saturday. The rescheduled event will take place on Jackson Street instead of Illinois Street.

The National Weather Service predicted a west wind at 35 mph this afternoon with gusts reaching 60 mph.

Saturday is expected to be better for wind, the temperatures will be wintry. Saturday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 41. Wind chill values will be between -5 and 5. Winds will be out of the south southwest at around 15 mph.
