SIDNEY -- Keep Sidney Beautiful pushes for patience as weather and staffing has caused some recycling challenges.

Jason Nelke and Sabrina Murphy recently spoke on the conditions at recycling sites. He said there have been reports of back-ups at the bins in Sidney. Recycling bins are located at the east end of the Safeway parking lot, and south of the Shelter House in Legion Park.

"I know there's been some backup at the bins, constantly full," Nelke said.

He said despite what the bins may look like, Sidney's recycling program is working. He said most issues can be attributed to recent weather and staffing issues. He said it has also been a struggle keeping landfill staff up to the demands of city recycling.

"There's not a lot we can do at this moment, so we're just asking for some patience from the community to work with us a little bit as we sort through these issues," he said.

He added they are working on a schedule for people to safely bring their recyclables to the recycling center.

"We've still got a little planning to get that worked out, but we let everybody know as soon as we can," Nelke said.

Nelke asks people to hold onto recyclables a little longer, or break them down a little more to make more room in the bins.

Sabrina Murphy also reminds people what is accepted at the recycling sites. She said the recycling bins are not for PVC pipe, Styrofoam or clothes.

Keep Sidney Beautiful (KSB) has several events scheduled in the coming months including "The Great Trash Race" in June and a paper shredding event.
