Destructive wind, hail leaves trail of damage in Scotts Bluff County

Severe storms in southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska panhandle spawned at least one landspout tornado and produced softball size hail while leaving a trail of destruction Thursday afternoon.

SCOTTSBLUFF - Severe storms in southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska panhandle spawned at least one landspout tornado and produced softball size hail while leaving a trail of destruction Thursday afternoon.

A photo posted by the National Weather Service office in Cheyenne showed the landspout tornado near Hawk Springs in Goshen County, Wyo. at 2:45 p.m. The tornado remained on the ground for approximately five minutes. No damage was reported. Tennis ball size hail was also reported near Hawk Springs.

Softball size hail was reported in Yoder at 3:06 p.m.

The severe weather left damage in Scotts Bluff County. One official reported damage to a house and barn one mile, and flipped rail cars, south of Mitchell. Trained weather spotters reported downed power lines and poles near Morrill, Lyman and Mitchell. 

An estimated 750+ trees were down in Scotts Bluff County as of 3:35 p.m. The Rural Radio Network reported an unused 300-foot broadcast towers collapsed west of Scottsbluff in the storm.

An 85 mph wind gust was reported northeast of Morrill at 3:25 p.m. Another 84 mph wind gust was reported in Scottsbluff at 4 p.m.
