BENKELMAN, Neb. (KSNB) - Former Dundy County Sheriff Clinton Smith will be serving 90 days in jail and four years probation as part of his sentence after pleading no contest to attempted possession of a stolen firearm.

According to an affidavit, Nebraska State Patrol investigators discovered four missing firearms from the Sheriff’s office last year.

The interim sheriff Ryan King, who succeeded Clinton after an earlier recall election, asked Smith if he had any of the guns.

The affidavit says that Smith later contacted King to say he could not locate the weapons.

Court records show that a search warrant executed on Smith’s home and car turned up one handgun.
