Lyle was born on August 25, 1939, in Sidney, NE, to Walter D. and Mildred M. Johnson. He graduated from Sidney High School in 1957 before earning his degree from Chadron State College in 1962, where he met his future wife, Linda Ann Sybrant. The two married on December 28, 1963.

In November 1962, Lyle enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a Carrier Anti-Submarine Plane Commander, flying the S-2E Tracker. He was stationed in Pensacola, FL; Milton, FL and New Iberia, LA; with his home port in Quonset Point, RI. His service took him across the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, North Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, North Sea, and Norwegian Sea, aboard the aircraft carriers U.S.S. Lake Champlain, U.S.S. Lexington, and U.S.S. Essex.

Following the unexpected passing of his father in February 1968, Lyle made the difficult decision to leave the Navy upon completing his active-duty commitment in March 1968. Lyle and Linda returned to Lyle’s childhood home northeast of Sidney to live, work and raise their family on the family farm. Beyond farming, Lyle was deeply involved in his community. He served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, was a dedicated member of the Cheyenne County Farm Bureau, Sidney Rural Fire Board, and participated in the Amateur Radio Club.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Linda A. (Sybrant) Johnson, daughters Teresa L. Johnson-Pais of San Antonio, TX; Debra K. (Galen) Preston of Omaha, NE; and Sharon L. (Bill) Micek of Papillion, NE; grandchildren Lianna, Nathaniel, and Dominic Pais; Gregory and Joshua Preston; and Megan and Abigail Micek; sister Rita (Randy) Bauman of Port Angeles, WA; brother Glenn (Brenda) Johnson of Sidney, NE; and sister-in-law Kathy Johnson of Florence, AL.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, Walter D. and Mildred M. (Beyer) Johnson, brother, Dr. Donald L. Johnson, and son-in-law Bobby V. Pais.

Lyle’s legacy of dedication, service, and love will live on in the hearts of those who knew and cherished him.
