BURLINGTON, Colo. - A 17-year-old boy was killed and two others were seriously injured Wednesday morning in a crash involving two vehicles north of Burlington, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Troopers were called to Highway 385 near mile marker 191 around 11:39 a.m., about a mile and a half north of Burlington. Investigators said a 2001 Ford Focus carrying several male teenagers was stopped in the northbound lane, waiting to turn left onto Kit Carson County Road X, when it was rear-ended by a northbound 2018 Jeep driven by a 21-year-old woman.

Both vehicles veered off the road and into a nearby field.

A 17-year-old passenger in the backseat of the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others, ages 17 and 18, were airlifted to Denver-area hospitals — one with critical injuries and the other in serious condition. The 18-year-old driver of the Ford was taken by ground ambulance with minor injuries, while another 18-year-old passenger was treated at a Burlington hospital and released.

The driver of the Jeep suffered minor to moderate injuries and was also taken to a local hospital before being released.

Highway 385 was closed for several hours during the investigation and reopened around 4:40 p.m. The Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.
