KIMBALL -- Forty-five families are being provided with a Thanksgiving meal this year, which is the highest number of families fed as part of the Thanksgiving Food Basket program.

Shavonne Singleton started the program last year to provide families in need with a full Thanksgiving meal which includes a turkey, ingredients for green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, their choice of pie, corn, gravy mix, cool whip, milk and butter, 5-lb potatoes, and bread rolls.

“This was made possible by the huge help from community members and local businesses,” Singleton said. “This year, I had a ton of involvement from the community to come in and help.”

Singleton had so much support that she even had to turn people away who wanted to sponsor.

The sponsors donated a total of $2,150, with $250 left over, which will roll over to the fund for the Christmas Angel Tree program.

“I plan to purchase $50 gift cards from the grocery store and put those toward the families in the Angel Tree,” Singleton said. “We give each family a gift card to the grocery store during Christmas too, so that will give us a little bit of a headstart.”

The sponsors for the Thanksgiving Food Baskets are:

Kathleen Tomoi & Randy Bohac, Flower Haven & Gifts, Brown Pump & Septic, Bruce Sigette, La Delicia Food Truck, Beer & Loathing, Woody’s Liquor, Tom Campbell, Plummer’s Insurance, Hays Contracting, Farm Bureau Financial Services, Joe Fennell Pumping Service, Kimball Health Services, Kathi & Gene Franks, Kevin & Beth Spicer, Justin & Hillary Cook, Tallgrass Employees, Johnson Construction, Anderson Crude Trans., Inc., Kimball Service Center, Gentry & Jennifer Griebel, and Panhandle Auto Group.

“This community and our local businesses never fail to amaze me because every time there is a call for help, they’re all there,” Singleton said. “It’s just pretty amazing that our community comes together when there’s a need, and we make it happen, and I love that about Kimball.”
